One Choice. One Act.
A field guide to living in alignment with what matters most.
Designed for an age of overwhelm, One Choice. One Act. is a practical companion built on a single idea: that a meaningful life is not assembled from grand gestures, but from small, deliberate acts repeated until they become a shape.

Most people are not short on values. They are short on a way to translate those values into a Tuesday. One Choice. One Act. is that translation — a guide for closing the gap between what you believe and what you actually do.
It grew out of the same question that runs through all of Matthew’s work, turned inward: if how we live is how the larger systems change, then what is the smallest honest place to begin?
Three principles, and a practice.
01
Start small, on purpose
The smallest act, chosen deliberately, outperforms the largest intention left unspent.
02
Alignment over ambition
The question is not how much you do. It is whether what you do points where you mean it to.
03
Repetition is architecture
A meaningful life is not a single decision. It is the same small decision, made again.

M y first real practice appeared as mortality.
Cancer stripped away my illusions of time and control. It forced a reckoning with death I didn’t seek but met. That moment didn’t teach me alignment; it revealed the truth. I couldn’t live “later,” only today. The rest followed.
I had lived through a rare form of blood cancer—Stage IV-b ALK-negative—and the chemotherapy left behind a toxic residue I felt in every part of my body. In the wake of that survival, my daily practices became more deliberate. I started to watch my body, not in a performative way, but instinctively—much as an animal is aware of its body, its wounds, its motives, and its hunger.
When something expanded within me, I noted it. When something constricted me, I didn’t resist; I let it go.
Over time, this noticing became a language. I realized my body was often more honest than my mind. That attentiveness led to an ongoing audit of my life: I noticed what lifted or drained my energy, which conversations left me clear, and which left me foggy or anxious. I began to physically feel which commitments gave back and which took.
Expansion and contraction became my quiet teachers. I felt them immediately: some choices opened space, while others narrowed it. Practice meant trusting the feeling and leaning into it, rather than trying to think it away.
This book is not about what anyone should do. It is about how life opens when we stop numbing ourselves, stop following inherited habits, and start listening—really listening—to our bodies and to the quiet truths that rise in the absence of noise.
This isn’t about quitting your job tomorrow or making a drastic leap into the unknown. It’s about getting radically honest about what’s working and what isn’t. It’s about noticing where your life contracts and where it expands—and choosing, step by step, to build a life that reflects who you are, not who the world thinks you should be.
When you create space, truth becomes easier to feel and hear. Nothing can change when we surrender our agency to people, patterns, or extractive systems. But when we reclaim our power, change becomes possible.
One choice. One act. That’s how we change everything.
What happens when we stop living someone else’s script and start designing a life from the inside out?
One Choice. One Act. — The No-Bullshit Guide to Living Aligned is a quietly radical field guide for anyone feeling lost in the noise of modern life.
Drawing on Matthew Wilburn King’s lived experience—from growing up in working-class West Tulsa, to surviving Stage IV-b cancer with a less than 15% chance of survival, to exploring over 45 countries—this book translates hard-won wisdom into accessible, transformative steps.
Blending memoir, reflection, and practical tools, King offers stories from the edge of illness, achievement, and transformation. Grounded in real experience rather than superficial self-help, he provides concrete exercises to help readers navigate the tension between societal security and inner truth.
One Choice. One Act. is not just a book about transformation; it is an act of transformation itself. It argues that meaningful change begins within and gives readers a compass to stop performing, seal their energy leaks, and choose a life that feels like home.
Know Thyself
A foundation of radical self-awareness, stripping away inherited assumptions to uncover the true “why” behind our actions—before life forces an unexpected crisis.
The Body as a Compass
Learning to navigate complex decisions not by overanalyzing, but by noticing whether a choice makes you feel physically and emotionally expansive, neutral, or contracted.
Strategic Subtraction
A pragmatic approach to sealing energy leaks so that you can stop feeling so drained, step away from the performance economy, and release the urge to fix dysfunctional systems at the expense of your own life force.
The Dream Biography
A visionary exercise in imagining the life you were meant to live, illuminating the gaps between your current reality and that vision—and closing them through daily alignment, starting with one choice and one act at a time.
Written in the voice of a “quietly radical friend”—warm, sincere, grounded, and unapologetically honest. One Choice. One Act. speaks directly to anyone at any age navigating burnout, transition, or the search for meaning. It offers a map for those who are ambitious in spirit but disillusioned with extractive systems and the performance economy.
Vanished
The companion novel — myth, loss, and ecological mystery, set against the disappearance of the world we were promised.
